The MS Recovery Diet

More than half a million people live with multiple sclerosis, yet conventional medicine still has little to offer patients. There is no known cure-and even recent breakthroughs in drug therapy do not work to control many of the symptoms or promise any degree of recovery. But there is an alternative to drugs that can stop and reverse the ravaging symptoms of MS-the MS Recovery Diet. As this book explains, there are five common food triggers that can set off the symptoms of MS-dairy, grains containing glutens, legumes, eggs, and yeast. Yet because MS is such a complex disease, other foods play a role, as culprits or aides. The MS Recovery Diet explains the background, science, and development of this treatment in one source for the first time, and shows readers how to pinpoint their specific problem foods and sensitivities. It also offers more than one hundred simple recipes, as well as strategies to improve digestion, balance the immune system, and repair the body’s myelin-crucial steps toward healing the body. Both of the authors, Ann D. Sawyer and Judith E. Bachrach, who had been diagnosed and disabled by multiple sclerosis, have experienced incredible recovery on the diet. Within the first three months on this program, Sawyer was able to stop the disease progression and begin to walk short distances with an even gait. Bachrach, whose health has been declining because of MS for thirty-eight years, regained feeling in her toes in one week and after one year on the diet, has stopped taking all medication. This book shares the treatment plan that has dramatically changed their lives, and the lives of others who have discovered it. With inspiring personal stories throughout, it offers real help-and hope-for sufferers of MS.

The Multiple Sclerosis Diet Book Reviews

Review by Karl Granat:

In 1995 I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. I had a MRI done of my brain and there were lesions present, and many neurological symptoms. I saw double, had light sensitivity, had problems with walking and my balance. I began studying this book and immediately went on the Swank Diet. My saturated fat intake went under 15 grams a day (he allows 20 max) and no more than 5 grams of fat at a serving. I used his tables to compute the fat - this meant that an egg counted for 5 grams, and no red meat or milkfat for the first year of the diet. Immediately I felt much better. Now, my neurologist is amazed at my condition. My neurological symptoms are pretty much normal. I take no other medicine for the MS, and I feel great. I recomend the book and the cookbook which is included. Ask your MD and follow his advice- but I don’t think this diet could hurt anyone unless they were way underweight. The diet allows up to 60 grams of liquid oil each day which makes it easier to handle (ie- olive oil, hazelnut, etc,) and it seems really healthful. The oil makes it much easier to stay on the diet.) I feel great! The few times I have gone off the diet (even inadvertantly) I have felt worse quickly- even if I go off the diet even a little- so I stay on it religiously.

Review by Marty:

I was diagnosed with MS in 1990. My wife and I found this book almost immediately. We both have medical backgrounds. This book made sense. All my neurologist offered was testing and drugs. While the high dose steroids did alleviate my symptoms I knew there had to be more that I could do. Because of the information in this book I made lifestyle changes. Initially we left off all meat and meat products. We left 1% milk ,eggs and low fat cheese on our diet. We maintained total fat grams to less than 30/day. We both started an active exercise programm and just as importantly got plenty of rest. ( early to bed early to rise so to speak). Over the years I have modified the diet. I pretty much eat what I want now except I have not started eating meat again. Today after 10 years I do not have any significant residual effects from MS. I drink plenty of water everyday. I have not tried any of the new medical treatments for MS. Because of “The Multiple Sclerosis Diet Book” I made changes in my lifestyle that I felt would be healthy for me regardless of having MS. I did not agree with everything in the book and sort of picked and chose what I felt would be best for me personally. I have not regretted my lifestyle change and thank Dr. Swank for making this book available. I think it still has some of the best advice available to MS patients.

Multiple Sclerosis Fact Book Reviews

Review by :

This book gives the newly diagnosed or the newly interested person the facts of MS. It does not attempt to make you feel good, but leaves you knowing the truth, which for many is what they want to know. It tells you the (1995) treatments (needs update in this regard as new effective treatments continue to become available), gives you accurate stats on the likelihood of progression and other facts you want to know- like genetic susceptibility; tells you the myths about treatments that an MS’r is likely to run into, like curing with diet, vitamins, minerals and other “treatments” long since proven as having no curative value. It also gives helpful symptom relief data. It’s a no-nonsense but thoughtful explanation of the truth- Thomas P. Anderson, Ph.D., Psychologist w/MS 10 Yrs.

Review by :

I found this book extremely helpful as I am being evaluated for MS. Part of the proceeds benefit the MS Society and the author clearly wants to present the disease as he knows it- not as some harmless diagnosis nor some mythical death sentence. Should my possible diagnosis become definitive, I plan to send this book to my family members as what I believe is an accurrate description of life with MS and what lies in store.

Multiple Sclerosis: New Hope and Practical Advice for People with MS and Their Families Reviews

Review by :

I have read a few books about MS but this was the only one that seemed to give enough information in a way that I could understand it. It was neither too much in medical jargon nor so simplified that it made me feel stupid. I liked it, and thought it was informative and somewhat comforting.

Review by :

I was diagnosed with MS 6 years ago… by the author, Louis Rosner, M.D. at UCLA. I continued as his patient until he retired 3 1/2 years later. The
funny thing is, I had checked the earlier edition of this book out of the library while going through the diagnostic process with another neurologist and
was very impressed with its straightforward overview of the disease and its impact on the individual and their families. It lays out the facts and vagaries
of this chronic, life-changing disease without terrible gloom and doom, but also without a hint of condescention or fluff. He manages to tell you the
range of signs, symptoms, and the disability they may cause-from mild to severe-that can happen to a person with MS without unduly alarming
someone new to it. He also reviews case histories of a number of patients he had followed over the years, which I found very enlightening, as it shows
just how MS can affect people so differently.I’d made my appointment at UCLA with one of their “MS specialists,” and only later realized it was the author. I was lucky-I cannot imagine a
neurologist explaining MS to me (in person, as well as in the book) any better than Dr. Rosner. Because this edition of the book (1992) is the latest
available, and Dr. Rosner is now retired, I have no idea if there are any plans for an updated edition. I would love to see one, but even though the book
does not touch on the new immunomodulating and chemo therapies now widely used in treating MS, it remains an extremely useful book in any “MS
library.” I have yet to read a better, overall explanation of this baffling disease, and have recommended it to many.Incidentally, the new therapies not covered in this book, were initially available only beginning in the early 90s, and then, only through a lottery. This is
why they are not touched on in this book.

The Everything Health Guide to Multiple Sclerosis: An authoritative guide to help you understand symptoms, decide on treatment, and enhance your well-being (Everything Series) Reviews

Review by Deborah Bly:

I have yet to be officially diagnosed with MS. I found this book is extremely helpful in understanding the disease. Great for information on how to approach doctors, how to look at your symptoms, how to relate with family, friends, co-workers etc. I definitely recommend especially if you are recently diagnosed or on the verge. I would think it would be helpful for those with MS as well.

Review by Deborah A. Gunn:

I found this edition useful, although much of the information was found in several other publications. I have at least 8 publications on MS and the information is basically the same. Until stem cel research comes out, I will not purchase anymore books.

Healing Multiple Sclerosis: Diet, Detox & Nutritional Makeover for Total Recovery Reviews

Review by Ondine Vuillard:

I appreciate everyone’s optimism and exuberance about this book. I am a 43 year old woman that has been diagnosed with MS since 1995. Not as long as the author, yet considering I was a quadriplegic for 3 months in ‘99 I feel it is within my rights to comment. I am now fully ambulatory, no one would have a clue I am struggling with a chronic illness if they were to see me during an up time, which is often, but never as up as I was prior diagnosis. I must ask all of you, author included, to desist in stating that this diet will ‘cure’ MS. There is currently no cure. Period. Of course, healthy living helps, that is obvious…….But have you considered how it might it make people feel that have tried every book and diet and treatment and nothing is seems to improve their condition or stop progression? This disease has truly horrific potential, fortunately for those of us that have R/R we have some hope for remission, yet not a ‘cure’. No ‘cure’ insight, may I add. This disease is insidious. You simply never know what will happen next, possibly nothing, no one knows. Please do not add insult to injury, please. Mental attitude is so very important, let us support and be considerate to the individuals out there that have not been able to go into ‘remission’, regardless of diet or supplements.Libre de esclerosis multiple/ Healing Multiple Sclerosis

Review by R. West:

I recommend this book for everyone suffering from MS. I was diagnosed with MS 12 years ago (at age 17), and this was the first time I actually received hope that my condition could improve. Since I’ve been following her program layed out in the book (9 weeks in now), I have felt a wonderful improvement in my condition which is more than any of the FDA approved drugs gave me. I will continue on this program and pray for the same success the author experienced. If you have MS or know anyone that does, get this book!!!!
